[to top] Band Memoirs

This is a Various Artists collection that honors The Blanks with covers of some of our classic tunes. It was a big project that could have fallen apart but came together perfectly. A number of bands had come to us over the years wanting to participate in a “tribute album” if such an opportunity came up. Around 1995 there seemed to be a critical mass of interested parties, so the project got legs. I started signing up artists and filling out a song list. I thought there might be squabbling over song selections (for example, everyone may want to do “Marta Rules”), but groups gravitated toward different songs they felt strongly about.

I really like this album and I'm proud of the solid artists that participated. We were truly honored by the best the music business had to offer. Rich Boys nailed “Eggheads,” one of the most important songs in our history. It was especially cool as they rarely release songs, they're too busy being popular and spending money. It was also nice to include Swingin' Lou Martin, a crooner who we'd hung out with since early Trash Rock days. This also marks the debut of Place of Pete, a skeleton crew of Place of Torment alumni. One of my favorites and biggest hits from the album is Area 51 doing “Sweet Sally.” All the artists made great contributions.

I had a lot of fun working with everyone. There are a number of outtakes from these sessions that I encouraged the bands to perform while we were recording. Someday, we'll come out with another Various Artists compilation of these unreleased songs. I cannot comment on visits by Special K and Shorty D “encouraging” me to publish their unreleased tracks.

Update: Many of the outtakes from these sessions are now available on The Hotdog Cookbook. There are a few tracks still in the vault that will likely surface someday.
