Our recent break-up seemed like it would stick. When we would get together we barely mentioned The Blanks. Occasionally, we would laugh about some event from the past or whatever, but we weren't even thinking about recording again. We still saw many old friends, including Kone, Mark Miller (occasionally), Christopher, etc. I started working with Mr. Ed in a band called Revelations around that time. The Revelations would eventually include Kone and sign with Blanks Enterprises. I believe as a lark The Blanks may have recorded New house. But I don't think we planned to do anything with it.
I guess the hiatus from music must have been good for Ran. One night after watching a talent show, Kar, Ran, and I decided to head to Drum Room Studios. We got there and set up a keyboard to Nasty Moe. That was the setup we had used for The Day I Was Turned into a Chipmunk. At the time, I think we were originally just intending to maybe jam a little and not record anything at all. I believe we were all thinking it was going to be a one-time jam and nothing more.
All of a sudden Ran blasted out the music to Marta Rules. When he was done, no one moved. No one could move. We were all stunned. I don't know if Ran had worked out the music elsewhere or not, but I don't think even he was ready for what it sounds like with Nasty Moe's help. Ran also had the idea for that 4/4 drum beat to start it off. We felt the power, and right there we knew that we had to record the song. There was a power in that room emanating from that song that I don't know if I have ever felt since. We spent the rest of the evening recording Mara Rules.
After another week we had Phuong Nam's Southern Grocery recorded. This included the help of our old friend Kone. Another week later and we recorded I Am a Fireman. Abercrombie lent his vocal talents to that one. We then packaged those three songs with New House. And released the EP. It was hugely successful, and The Blanks were back.
