[to top] Band Memoirs

As I remember it, we wrote and recorded both of these songs in one day. A day that started off with much excitement, and promise, yet ended in frustration and chaos. The writing and recording for “Eggheads” went very well, and we were all happy with the results. But, we ran into problems first with the writing of “She Ate My Lunch.” I had only come up with one part, for a song with two. We decided to record it anyway, playing the partially developed second part very quietly. The recording was further complicated, when Sprite (my dog), started jumping up on me and barking in the middle of the song. You can actually hear the frustration in Jimmy's voice build as the song goes on. We would not record together again.

– Ran

As I remember being told, the band started in the summer of 1982 when Ran and his brother Jimmy decided to make music inspired by their favorite bands such as Adam Ant and The Judy's. They solicited help on drums from Dynamic Drew, a friend down the street. That day, the three wrote and recorded “Eggheads” and “She Ate My lunch.” They called themselves The Blanks.

Though they sounded nothing like their influences, The Blanks made music history with their first two songs. Almost immediately after the recording (perhaps after the first listen), Jimmy quit the band. He wasn't proud of the effort, and I get the sense he thought he was “too cool” for that type of thing.

“Eggheads” and “She Ate My lunch” sat on the shelf for months. Ran and Dynamic Drew played them for me one day in 1983. It had been a while since I performed with other local musicians (Wolfgang and Prez), but these Blanks songs got me a music bug I still haven't shaken. We agreed to team up to complete a full-length debut album. We secured Mark Miller for backing vocals, and with this new line-up, The Blanks pressed on.
